Synopsis and details
Young Cecil Gaines, in search of a better future, fled in 1926, the southern United States, in the throes of apartheid tyranny. While becoming a man, he acquired invaluable skills that allow him to reach a coveted position: butler of the White House. This is where Cecil becomes for seven presidencies, a privileged witness of his time and negotiations that take place in the Oval Office.
At home, his wife, Gloria, raises their two son, and the family enjoys a comfortable existence thanks to the position of Cecil. Yet his commitment raises tensions in her marriage: Gloria away from him and dispute with one of his son, especially contrarian, are endless.
Through the eyes of Cecil Gaines, the film traces the evolution of American politics and community relations.
